A stone slab with engraved calligraphy on its surface. Due to the natural durability of stones, many important texts, such as official statements, were incised in stones. Thanks to this, calligraphers today can study classics (古典, こてん, koten) from ink rubbings (拓本, たくほん, takuhon) of ancient masterpieces. The oldest stone inscriptions ever found (except markings in Damaidi area (大麥地) are Stone Drum Inscriptions (石鼓文, せっこぶん, sekkobun,) from the 8th century B.C.
