Qing dynasty (清朝, pinyin: Qīng cháo, 1644 – 1912 C.E.)
The Qing dynasty could be considered the dawn of modern Chinese calligraphy. The famous words of the brilliant landscape painter 石涛 (Shí Tāo, 1642 - 1710) laid the foundation for modern Chinese calligraphy aesthetics. He said that “the ink should follow the times”. Still, it was not until the 20th century that Chinese calligraphy started to deviate rather drastically from the classically rigid approach.
